SHINWOOK KIM (Born in Seoul, graduated from Fine Art Goldsmiths University of London in 2012, completed a master’s degree in photography at the Royal College of Arts in 2014) is an artist who uses his photography to construct his own introspective nocturnal dimension, creating a mise en abyme in which a threshold passage from the vigilant state to the hypnotic state is incessantly duplicated. A visual example of this operative process is readable in the cycle of works entitled The Night Watch 2011-2017 , which resumed, during its military service, a solitary night-time patrol in a border area between North and South Korea. The state of tiredness united to the tension that runs through it, passing through a demilitarized zone, but at risk, they make him mistake for a person a large tree trunk in which he suddenly came across. From that moment on, his photographic shots take up the phantasmatic aspect of the forest in which he wanders, as if in a daydream. At night, the ghostly light, which illuminates the edges of the tree crowns, gives his work an optically magnetic and psychically Gothic image.Shinwook Kim is deeply attracted by the immaterial boundaries between country and country, by anyone’s land, by non-places,
